For the past two years annually, a group of 20 architecture students from across the whole school participated in a summer LA study trip led by Dean Desley Luscombe and Head of School Anthony Burke. We are now seeking expressions of interest from students in both the undergraduate and graduate degrees to join us on the 2013 trip.
The trip is planned for 28th January 2013 – 14th February 2013, and is tentatively scheduled to take in 3 days in Chicago followed by 13 days in Los Angeles. We will again be touring Gehry Partners studio office and spend an afternoon interview session with Frank Gehry. In addition, the Chicago portion of the trip will include a focus on Mies Van der Rohe, Frank Lloyd Wright and early highrise construction in Chicago, with highlights in LA including lectures at UCLA and SciArc, a visit to the Getty Architecture Drawing Research archives as well as a tour to a range of modern and contemporary buildings including the Salk Institute, Case study 22, the Eames House, Helios House, Sheats Goldstein (Lautner) House and More. Last years’ trip was a huge success, we hope to make this trip even better.
Further information on the schedule will be given during a Q&A meeting session with Anthony and/or Desley during Week 9. All interested students are welcome to attend. Details on this meeting will be provided closer to the date.
Students need to consider costs for the trip which will include airfares, accommodation and entries to venues. Last year many students travelled to other US destinations prior to or after our tour.
Interested students should submit their applications by *Friday the 12th October 2012* to Nalisa Mam, Executive Assistant to the Head of School, Architecture, in HARDCOPY ONLY to office 5.91, Level 5 in the architecture staff offices.
Application materials should include;
A 300 word personal statement
A 5 page maximum portfolio of design work A4 format
A copy of your academic transcript (web-print out is okay)
Selection of the (20) students for this trip and notification will occur the week after the submission of applications.
