UTS School of Architecture recently hosted the student group of the Urban Design Research Laboratory [UDRL], from the Universiti Teknologi Mara Malaysia [UiTM] in December 2010. After spending a week in Melbourne, the group consisting of thirty-one students (third, fourth and final year B.Sc. and B.Arch) and three lecturers, visited Sydney and UTS for the International Urban Installation Workshop in Sydney “CITY’S FRAGMENTATION / BY-PRODUCT: SYDNEY”
The workshop offers a platform for a debate on the limits of formal thinking in the architectural realm of the imagination. This is a project in which participants are asked to either prepare or; fix or; invent or; assemble or; rustle up a lightly conscientious proposal around Sydney Harbour.
The main intention of this workshop is to explore ‘ways of considering’, understanding and interpreting objects, spaces and events. The participants will learn to look beyond the noticeable and the visible – into the unseen, uncontrollable and ‘illogical’ qualities of built environment. Participants will experience how spaces, form, colour and volume affect human and their environment, especially in Sydney’s hyper-cultural downtown.
