We have just completed the inaugural UTS Discover Architecture Summer School. During the two-week program thirty potential students of architecture undertook a range of activities that were designed specifically to offer a glimpse into what it is to study and practice architecture. Not only did participants get to see how leading practitioners think and work, but they also experienced what it is like to design a building as part of a larger design team. In the process participants were asked to select their own site and develop their own brief as well as employ design processes that integrated advanced digital techniques and tools. By the end of the fortnight the students were able to not only demonstrate an exceptional ability to design a formally complex ‘new addition’ to the UTS City Campus but also assemble high quality images and models to exhibit this work to UTS staff, family and friends.
