The NSW Emerging Architect Prize recognises overall excellence in practice, research or education, and involvement in the profession through leadership.

The winner of the 2011 Prize, Matt Chan*, excels in all these areas.

In awarding the 2011 prize, the jury also recognised that with the opportunities Matt has created to develop thinking through teaching, research, discourse and speculative work, as well as collaborative practice, he has great potential to continue this contribution to the profession, well into his career.

The talk will be followed by a question-and-answer session, where fellow emerging architects, students and graduates are free to ask the difficult questions, focusing on mentoring, teaching and career progression. In order to keep the session moving along, the winner only has one minute to answer each question.

The evening is hosted by Janne Ryan, an ideas curator and executive producer of the recent TEDxSydney event. Ryan works on the ABC By Design team and is architecture writer for The Australian’s Wish magazine. She also co-produced the ABC-TV series, In The Mind OfThe Architect.

* Matt Chan is currently teaching a Master of Architecture Studio (11510 Architectural Design: Environmental Performance) at UTS School of Architecture.
