The INDEX Forum 2011 will explore the phenomena of large-scale urban events and their role in city making. The rapid increase in the number of biennales, festivals, other architectural and art-driven events indicate their important role as drivers of economic activity in cities. This tendency has been recognised at the level of government through the creation of ministerial portfolios designed to deal with major events but is less understood as a strategic factor in the transformation of the urban fabric. The discussion will explore the relation between the temporal intensity and the spatial reconfiguring of these short lived events and their longer lasting transformative impact on the urban fabric.
